Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What is “Polar Jade”?

Polar Jade refers to the finest variety of Canadian nephrite, typically sourced from regions near the Arctic Circle. It is highly esteemed for its exceptional purity, rarity, and refined mineral characteristics.

Canada holds the world’s largest known nephrite reserves, especially in British Columbia and the Yukon. Within these deposits, Polar Jade represents the highest grade—formed over millions of years under intense Arctic geological pressure, mineral transformation, and glacial erosion.

Polar Jade is a homogeneous solid solution of tremolite and actinolite, sharing the same chemical composition as traditional Hetian nephrite. It has a hardness of approximately 6.5–7.0, a refractive index around 1.62, and may contain trace iron and chromium ions (responsible for natural “chromium spots”). Not all Polar Jade displays visible spots, and their presence alone does not guarantee authenticity.

Featuring a mist-like, interwoven fibrous structure, Polar Jade is exceptionally tough—one of the most durable natural gemstones. Its colors range from vivid green to yellow-green and deep forest green. With a fine texture and distinctive oil-like luster, Polar Jade is considered one of the most exquisite nephrite varieties available today.

Less than 1% of Canadian nephrite meets the criteria for true Polar Jade, making high-quality material extremely rare. The deposits are located in remote, frigid mountainous regions where mining conditions are particularly challenging, further contributing to its scarcity and value.

With its minimal fractures, attractive color, and refined texture, Polar Jade is highly prized by collectors and fine jewelry connoisseurs.

2. Is Polar Jade real jade?

Yes. Polar Jade is authentic nephrite jade. Its mineral composition—a tremolite–actinolite solid solution—features the classic interwoven fibrous structure identical to high-quality Hetian nephrite. It meets all internationally recognized gemological standards:

  • GIA (Gemological Institute of America)
  • CIBJO (World Jewellery Confederation)
  • Chinese National Standards GB/T 16552 & GB/T 16553

In the field of professional gemology, Polar Jade is fully acknowledged as genuine nephrite jade that aligns with established Hetian jade standards.

3. What are the main characteristics of Polar Jade?

Polar Jade is celebrated for its exceptional beauty, refined texture, and elegant luster.

  • Rich, natural color
    Common: green, deep green
Rare: apple green, vivid “sun green”
  • Fine texture and strong luster
Its smooth, oil-like sheen and dense fibrous structure make it ideal for bangles, pendants, carvings, and collectible art pieces.
  • Natural chromium spots
These are caused by trivalent chromium ions. However, chromium spots do not define Polar Jade, and many premium Polar Jade pieces do not exhibit visible spots.

4. How is Polar Jade graded?

Polar Jade grading is based on a comprehensive evaluation of several gemological factors:

  • Color uniformity
Whether the color is rich, pure, even, and refined. In jade valuation, slight variations in color can significantly impact value.
  • Texture fineness
Whether the fibrous structure is dense, delicate, and evenly distributed.
  • Fractures and inclusions
The location, depth, and structural impact of any fractures or natural inclusions directly affect value.
  • Luster and oiliness
A soft, elegant luster and high oiliness indicate finer quality.

5. What is Ammolite?

Ammolite is a natural gemstone formed from ancient ammonite fossils over tens of millions of years. It uniquely combines the heritage of fossils with the vivid iridescence of gemstones, making it one of nature’s most remarkable treasures.

According to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA):
Only ammonite fossils from the Bearpaw Formation in Alberta, Canada, can be classified as gem-grade Ammolite.

As the world’s only commercial source and a non-renewable fossil resource, Ammolite possesses exceptional rarity and enduring collectible value.

6. How valuable is Ammolite?

(1) Extremely rare and non-renewable

  • World’s only deposit
  • Non-renewable fossil resource
  • Increasing environmental regulations and mining restrictions
  • High-grade raw material is becoming progressively scarce

(2) More colors = higher value

  • The more colors present, the rarer the specimen
  • Vibrant and saturated colors indicate higher value
  • Blue and purple hues are the rarest, requiring deeper geological pressure

(3) Cultural and symbolic importance

  • Designated as a Canadian national gemstone and Alberta’s provincial gemstone
  • Revered by the Blackfoot Nation as “Iniskim” (Buffalo Stone)
  • Symbolizes protection, prosperity, good fortune, and blessings

(4) Long-term investment potential

With a single place of origin, reducing supply, and increasing global interest, high-quality Ammolite continues to show stable appreciation.

7. Why does Ammolite have so many colors? Is it natural?

Yes. Ammolite’s iridescent colors are completely natural. They come from microscopic layers of aragonite that refract, diffract, and interfere with light—producing vivid, rainbow-like optical effects.

Variations in layer thickness, structure, and the original ammonite shape result in each Ammolite gemstone being entirely unique and impossible to replicate.

Are there treated or imitation products?

Yes. Some market products may include:

  • Dyed materials
  • Layered or composite pieces
  • Artificial color enhancement

We recommend verifying the origin and certification of any Ammolite purchase.

All Ammolite offered by Natural Gems Canada is natural, untreated, and undyed, accompanied by authenticity certification and origin documentation.
